by Sydnor Thompson, Jr.

ISBN 1-59948-056-5, 258 pgs, $14.95

A lawyer--swearing to tell only the truth--deposes himself on his kaleidoscopic life. This book is the evidence. His best barbs are self-administered as Sydnor Thompson traces his pilgrims' journey across eight decades. All the way, you hear him humming.

-- Rolfe Neill, publisher, The Charlotte Observer 1975-1997 (retired)

An absorbing account of a colorful and well-lived life. Reading this memoir is like spending an evening by the fireside with a remarkable man who has fascinating tales to tell of his life in the law -- and about life in general. It is an engaging reading experience, which shows one a great deal about the strength of American life.

-- Jack Perry, U.S Ambassador (retired)

A Puckish wit intrudes throughout the book, along with verses appropriate for the occasion. For balance, he also tells of his perceived shortcomings. When you put this book down, you'll be glad you met Sydnor Thompson.

-- William Joslin, Raleigh Attorney

Following Governor Jim Hunt's appointment of him to the North Carolina Court of Appeals, Governor Hunt introduced Sydnor to the Democratic Party's State Executive Committee and in the course of his remarks compared Sydnor to Jesus. In response, Sydnor related a story that John Cansler once told him. When a professor, who was chaperoning a college dance, complimented him on his dancing prowess, John modestly disclaimed any such talent, whereupon the professor responded, "John, if anyone ever again tells a damn lie in your favor, don't contradict him."
